Week 11 - Hand of God

This picture started off as a test to see whether i could free hand draw with the mouse. It turns out i can, alot better then i thought i could to be honest. As it looked alot better then i thought i decided to turn it into a proper picture. Once again it is a religion based picture about the creation of the universe. This picture is meant to be the hand of god createing the universe and everything. The Universe i took off Google and edited it into the picture and the lightning i made out of brushes i found. The lightning is meant to represent the swirling mass of energy at the creation of the universe, also known as the 'Big Bang.' It is the earliest and most natural from of energy known to man, thought to create the first fire for mankind. The background i plan on leaveing black as it is meant to be the empty space in which God created all we know and dont know.

Week 9 & 10

These weeks were continuations of the video createing class and as i stated previously i didnt get much out of these classes. I learned that video art can be just about whatever you want it to be. The videos shown in class were prevocative and intresting but for the most part its not something i really want to take part in. I also found out that final cut pro is the best video editing softwear on Macs as iMovie had lots of problems reading and converting videos. Final cut pro is able to do all the things iMovie can but alot easier without as much hassle.
These weeks i worked on some other religion related pieces of art that weren't really related to the seven deadly sins.

Envy

This picture was different. I tried my hand at manipulating a photo which was inspired randomly when i found the picture of this girl and her doll on deviantart. I thought that the picture by itself showed Envy in the modern day so i decided to use it. I decided to add a horrible creature on her shoulder, the personification of Envy. I wanted it to look like it was influencing her, like it was whispering in her ear about how she should be envious of things. I wanted it to be like the little demon on a persons shoulder whispering in their ear telling them to do bad things.
I couldn't decide how to do the background of this picture, obviously i wanted to keep green as a theme of this picture to keep with the 'green with envy' saying but i didn't want the background to be a static colour so this is what i came up with.

Angels

Here is one of the pieces i was working on in class during the video editting classes. I got the idea to try and modernise other aspects of religion and the first thing that came to my head was an angel. I made these pictures from scratch using lots of different brushes. The wings are made of multiple layers that ive blended into one another. I made two types of angels, the first one i kinda went crazy with the brushes to see what it would look like. I thought that look rather crowded with too many things trying to grab your attention so i tried removing the tattoos.

This is the angel without tattoos. I left the heart shape in the middle because i think it worked with the rest of the picture. I also left the spiked halo behind the head to keep with the modern sort of twist with the angel. I added a glow around the body and the halo to add a holy feel to the picture. I myself prefer the angel without the tattoos as it keeps the angelic look of the angel without being to crowded.

Week 8

Video art..... Well ive made a movie before so ive used video cameras and video editing software before, namely final cut pro. This was all familiar to me although i never used iMovie to edit videos before. This digital art median is probably something im not going to really use for this class mostly because it is extreemly time consumeing as i have experienced in the past, all the shooting and editing takes foooooreeeeeveeeerr and i really dont have time to get into something like that with all thee other classes i have aswell.

Omg Greed

Well heres the second of my 5 finishing art works. Greed. This one i decided to use text for because, well, i wanted to give it a try and see whether i could create something interesting and provocative. I used a silhouette i found on google images of a buisness man and turned him into text. I wrote up a passage on greed being about wants and desires and about greed being the want of something you dont have, which could be alot of different things not just objects but loved ones or people as well. I think that greed is one of the most intresting of the sins because it can incorperate a great deal of things, not just your typical greed stuff like money or power but also things people wouldnt refer to as sin like. This picture however is a representation of Greed today in the form of a buisness, hidden away and masked by smileing faces, it lurks behind the grinning teeth just out of view. I couldnt think of what to use as a background so i decided to make it a money note to symbolize where Greed is most prominent.

Week 6 & 7

These week were intresting. We used a program i had never tried before called painter and i have to say i think its awesome. It allows you to create some really wild pieces of art without really doing much. It also allows you to create paintings useing brushes in the program. The brushes in this program work pretty much the same way they do in real life, you can change the thinkness depending on hom much presure you use, you can mix colours manually in a pallete as you would in real life and painting to different colours over one another on the picture creates a blending affect with i thought was real handy.
I spent so much time mucking around and just trying all the different settings on this thing that i didnt actually finish an pictures, i was more or less experimenting with all the tools and brushes and affects i had at my disposal.
We also tried tablets in class as well which i have to say did not work for me in the slightest. I know that its probably because im not used to useing them but i just find them really awkard. They tend to be overly sensitive to everywhere you move and touch, the click when you dont want to click or vice versa and they dont give the result the same way a pen and paper would. I gave it a shot and found that free hand drawing, as you would with a pen and paper, is a nightmare on the tablet and i even prefered using a mouse over it.

First Sin Gluttony

This is a picture ive been working on in class fro a while now. GLUTTONY Rawr! Mix of photo editing and a collage i think i works reasonably well and it gets my point across. Gluttony is the sin of overussage waste, in other words takeing more then you need to and then throwing it away. I think this picture represents that rather well with all the trash and pollution in the background. I wanted to use a sureal face eatting into the world to give a more monsterous look while retaining some humanish features to it.
The hands were the biggest problem with this picture, i couldnt find any hands that worked well with it so i instead took a picture of me holding a basketball then just photoshoped my hands around the ball. I also originally planned on createing a body with this picture but it just made the picture to crowded with too many things fighting for your attention so instead i just left it as hands and a head.

Week 4

I must say i liked the idea of editing photos, it allows people to take real things and put a surreal twist on them. I am planning on useing this for a couple of my Seven deadly sins pictures. Envy was one i was deffinately going us this style of photo art for but i am still debating whether i want to use it for any other.
Ive never been big on photography, although ive never really tried it out to much extent. I have of course used digital cameras before but never for any ary purposes. It was fun giving it a try in class this week but i cant say ive really warmed to it much. I prefer manipulating and creating pictures I imagine.

Retro

This is the Retro piece i made in class last week in Adobe Illustrator as a mobile phone background.

Week 3

This week we tried out mobile phone art. it is an interesting median but i personally dont think it has much potential for creativity. We connected our phones to the computers and created different pieces of art in adobe illustrator to use as the backgrounds of our phones. I created a sort of retro background consisting of games like space invaders and pacman. My idea is that it is a comment on how even though entertainment has evolved to much greater heights we still find enjoyment and entertainment in these old and dated games.

Ideas For Final Folio

I was thinking of doing a set of pictures based around religion in some way but i wasn't sure what, because religion has always been a great topic for art and some really fantastic pieces of artwork have been created from that topic.
I had been recently over the holidays been looking at Dantes Divine Comedy which is what sparked my interest in art and religion. Gustave Dore's pieces were amazing especially the ones out of Dantes Inferno, the just were amazing to look at. I had such feeling and detail behind every picture and really got my brain working. So i decided to take an idea from Dantes Inferno and do my final folio based around the 'Seven Deadly Sins' which make up part of the 9 rings of Hell in the poem.

Week 2

This week was Adobe Illustrator, and using text in Art work. I found Illustrator to be a lot like Photoshop. I have previously done a Photoshop course so I'm familiar with most the basics but i wouldn't consider myself to be very good at it. I had fun using the text tool and other tools in Illustrator and learned a few things about vector graphics. During my mucking around on there i wiped up a simple picture really quickly (Above), i think that it looks like a mix between an Atoms and balloons but i think it turned out ok.
I didn't like anything i came up with when i was using the text tool, i found it clumsy and that the things i came up with looked really clunky and didn't have much flow to it. Then again i just started with this median so maybe with a bit of practice i can come up with something that i think looks good.

Week 1

This week i went on the sites recommended and found some really bizarre but intriguing pieces of digital art. The site Rhizome opened my eyes to the what digital art can be. There are so many different ways to create digital art and so many things to create. One piece in particular that i found really interesting was a 3D interactive environment. The piece itself is called "Analog Environments" and is by Mitch Trale, it can be found here .

Seeing this Artwork really opened my eyes to the capability and potential of digital art. You can create virtually anything you want with it from unbelievably complicated sketches to complete Worlds of you imagination.

On the other hand I found some pieces that really came across as incredibly simple and had no thought and imagination put into it, but such is art, it is all a matter of perspective.
